Introduction to the Family Tree

INTRODUCTION

While going through Dr. Henny Sander's "The Kashmiri Pandits" I found a couple of pages devoted to Pandit SHIV NARAIN KAK. It set me thinking how little I knew of my great grand father's descendants - my relations. I started making enquiries to collect and collate information about Shiv Narain Kak's progeny. I had in view, not a family tree of the conventional type confined to agnates but a listing of the cognates. The collation is Shiv Narain Kak downwards. The idea being to know who all among us are inter-related. Sukh Kumar Kak in London is tracing the family tree, Sir Sukhdeo Prasad Kak upwards.

Although I received a lot of affectionate and ready help the process of collecting information has been slow. In some cases considerable material was available from a single source, in others it came in bits and pieces. A few relations were not tracable, while some chose - for their own reasons - not to respond. I have re-produced in the following  pages the information collected so far. Where known "not married" (n.m) and "no issue" (n.i) has been indicated. There are several blanks particularly about the newly wed and the new born. The end result is far from complete and some errors could have also crept in. I shall be grateful and consider my labour rewarded if I receive further information (including corrections) or suggestions so that the list could be up-dated.

I am thankful to all the relations who provided information and  encouragement. I am particularly grateful to Pandit Tej Narain  (Teju Bhai) Kak but for whose information about Shiv Narain's sons and daughters and their spouses I could not have made any headway. My special thanks to Rajlakshmi (Bibi) Raina, Kamini Mota, Kishen Zuthsi, Amarnath (Jotibhai) Kaul, Saraswati Prakash (Nikkubhai) Wattal, Gyan Nath Madan and Madan Mohan Kishen Wali for the details and leads provided by them. And last but not the least, acknowledgement (sans merci) of assistance provided by Indu Kak in cross checking the names, proof-reading and other odd jobs.
